The Ramseys
Stewart Ramsey and his son, Carl Ramsey, are the the fifth and sixth generation farmers to operate Ramsey's Farm, located between the Brandywine Creek and the Pennsylvania State Line North of Wilmington. Joined by Stewart's wife Wendy, the Pumpkin Patch has been in operation since 1995.
History of the Farm
The largest share of our operation occurs on what was owned by the Ramsey family from 1860 through 1986. The land has since become part of the First State National Historical Park. The Pumpkin Patch has been rented since 1990 offering Pick-Your-Own Pumpkins and many other fall activities. On the farm we raise pumpkins, gourds, ornamental corn, popcorn, feed corn and hay. The pumpkin patch typically consists of 10-12 acres which grows over 50,000 pumpkins and our corn maze is about 10 acres.
What We Grow and Sell
Our pumpkin field is 10-12 acres and yields approximately 50,000 pumpkins each season. The pumpkins come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Our largest pumpkin to date was 200lbs. In addition to pumpkins, we have several types of squash. Although hubberd squash looks like a pumpkin, it is sweeter and makes for good cooking. They can easily tip the scales at over a hundred pounds. We also grow ghost pumpkins, another type of squash, are often blueish looking or white, hence the name. Crooked neck squash, also a good cooking pumpkin, has a long crooked neck and when ripe, is brownish-orange in color. In addition to pumpkins, we grow various varieties of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, corn and more!
